Begining my journey to declutter my home
One of my goals for this year was to get rid of half of my belongs, or what we refer to as my junk. I feel like I live in clutter and it does stress me out. So what better place to share beginning my journey to declutter my home, than here on my blog.
The first thing I did was google it, and then I headed to Pinterest. I haven’t spent a lot of time on Pinterest in YEARS. Not sure why. I used to love it, but thats a whole different blog post.
But when I open my much neglected Pinterest account and put in declutter home, all I get is people trying to sell me pages and calendars. I guess good honest advice is harder to find. I get the hustle, but first I have to trust you before I pay for your advice. Just saying.
Studies on Clutter and how it affects different people
Clutter does not effect everyone the same. There have been studies on clutters impact. And let me point out that clutter is not the same for everyone!
How Clutter and Mental Health are Connected was a great article I found while researching. A couple of things that stuck out to my brain.
Difficulting focusing is enormous! Think about this. You can multitask only so much. And with clutter surrounding you and trying to focus, you have so many stimuli surrounding you that it makes focusing even more difficult.
Another point in this article is that people with clutter are shown to procrastinate. Boy, does that hit the target. It’s hard to do something when it is cluttered and unorganized!
I will be honest here, I won’t cook or bake until my kitchen is clean and organized. It’s just one of those things. I also think it is one of the major reasons I haven’t been crafting, is because it’s hard to stay focused and get it done when my crafting area is so cluttered!
The Home Edit
I have been procrastinating this decluttering thing for years now. And within this time I have bought decluttering books. I know, huge surprise! The following links are to the method I am most drawn to and will be starting, TODAY!
Let me say right here to be clear, these are affiliate links.
The Home Edit: A Guide to Organizing and Realizing Your House Goals
This is apparently the book that started it all! I have the physical book and the audio book for this one.
These two are follow up books. To help organize and maintain!
and the one I will be working through
Now the Home Edit method may not be for everyone. When I asked CoPilot to help me describe the Home Edit method it came up with
The Home Edit declutter method, created by professional organizers Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin, is a systematic approach to transforming chaotic spaces into organized havens. It starts with their signature four-step process: Edit, Categorize, Contain, and Maintain. First, they “Edit” by removing items that are no longer needed or loved. Then they “Categorize” the remaining items into groups that make sense for the space and the user. Next, they “Contain” these items in clear, uniform bins or other storage solutions to keep everything tidy and visually appealing. Finally, they establish a “Maintain” system to ensure the organization remains functional and sustainable over time. This method emphasizes both practicality and aesthetics, often incorporating rainbow color-coding for an added touch of fun and visual harmony.
There are so many methods. Just as clutter does not affect everyone the same, decluttering methods aren’t a one-fit-all method. I looked into a number of different methods, like Swedish Death Cleaning, you gotta love that name. Many years ago I did the Slob sisters, which is where the FlyLady came from.
How I think this would work best
Now sometimes I am convinced that my brain works different than other people. I think that you need to find the method that resonates with you! Because if it doesn’t, you won’t stick to it.
Let me tell you a story.
Many times I have gone to visit my Mom. Love her to death, but she is more cluttered than me. And I have spent my time at her home decluttering her kitchen or craft room. And it will look good when I leave. When I come back it looks like I was never there.
Why?
Because how I organize doesn’t click with her brain. No hate to her! You have to find the system that works for you!
Don’t be afraid to switch it up! If you start something and it isn’t working, change gears and try something else!
Trust me if you keep trying you will find your method! It may be one of the ones you research, or it may be a combination of methods!
The thing is, its your home. It’s your stuff. Make it work for you!
Let’s Go!
So I am starting with my workspace and my living room. Today i am going to work on my desk and the table with it. Let’s see how that works. Updates will be posted.
I picked 2 areas, because I know I get bored easily and this way if one isn’t doing it for me I can switch to the next!
Please join me on this journey!
Let’s declutter!
