Why do I need an email list for my creative business?

If you are new, you may have just heard you need an email list. If you have been doing business online for awhile, I am pretty sure you have heard this at least a few times. But many people resist the advice to starting an email list.

  1. They hate asking for a person’s email address
  2. They don’t know what emails they would send to an email list
  3. Services for email list are too expensive
  4. The whole thing sounds way too complicated for a small business.

Your email list is THE MOST IMPORTANT TOOL your business has.

Imagine that ETSY shuts down your shop. What if a hacker gets your website and the whole thing is lost. What if Facebook decides you violated a term of service and deletes your fan page?

I know, scary huh?

Your email list will keep that list of customers for you. You will have access to all the people who have expressed interest in your product. It doesn’t matter if you sell a physical product or a digital product, your email list is the most important tool that you have.

Let’s talk about some of the things that hold people back from starting their own email list.

  1. They hate asking for a person’s email address

In this day and age, most of us have full inboxes. People cannot stand spam. You need to remember that these people are asking for information on your product. They may have given you their email address in exchange for a discount code. They may have left it in exchange for a digital download. Or maybe they signed up for your newsletter to learn more about you and your product. Whatever the reason, they gave you their email.

  1. They don’t know what emails they would send to an email list.

There is so much that you can send out to your list. You can have a Newsletter. You can offer sneak peeks at your new product. You can send them reminders of upcoming events. They want to hear from you. They want to get to know you. As long as you don’t send them 5 emails a day, I think you are doing great!

  1. Services for email list are too expensive.

Many people who are starting out, are operating on a shoestring. Email List services can be expensive. The top 2 paid are Aweber and Constant Contact. While both have different budgets that you can try, I am all for free. There are a lot of free lists out there as well. I recommend MailChimp  Now Mail Chimp is free for the smaller email list. Once you grow, you can switch to their paid option. By then you should be able to afford to pay. There may be a slight learning curve, but there are some great tutorials out there on how to set up a mailing list.

  1. The whole thing sounds way too complicated for a small business.

I know this one. This was me! Just the thought of an email list intimidated me.  I wanted to be creating my product line, not learning a new techie skill. But I did. I sat down one day with the tutorials available, and you know what? It wasn’t so hard after all. Once the email list is set up, then it pretty much is automatic. The only thing that you need to do is to go in and send the emails that you want to send.

So what is holding you back? Here is a link to one of my favorite ETSY expert Renae Christine and her tutorials on Mail Chimp.
