Dress for success - even when you work from home
I have to tell you, if you saw me right now, you would assume I was one of those housewives who could care less about their appearance. In my defense I have only had half a cup of coffee. My lavender jammie bottoms with little snow flakes on them clash miserable with the glaring tie die purple tank top, all wrapped up in a sweat jacket that is at least three sizes to large. Oh and don’t forget the blue stripped furry socks I just threw on to keep my feet warm.
I am most definitely not dressed for success today!
A lot of women online use the flylady. Now while I am a firm believer in her methods, I am sorry I can’t get by the first thing of the day. That is to get dressed down to your shoes. First off, I hate shoes. I have never liked shoes and more than likely you will see me barefoot. Yes even in January in New York (or the Northwoods, Yes I could do it!)
Now you know my house isn’t clean and I am not dressed for success. My question is this, Should we WAHMs be concerned about how we look?
Who sees us? Besides our kids, husbands, various family members, the UPS man, the neighbors etc. Do we need to be dressed to impress them?
Or is it more a frame of mind? Let’s think about that topic for just a moment. Does the way we dress effect how we do our work? Does it effect our productivity? I am reading a study that suggest just that. You change your attitude and your outlook by just changing your clothes.
I guess that is true in a way. I think I will challenge myself next week. All of next week I will get up, get dressed and see if I get more done. I mean it. All the way down to the shoes. No jammies or lounge pants. No t-shirts that come down to my knees. Real clothes.
No I am not talking business suits, just jeans and a nice shirt. With my keds on my feet. Next week is a short week, Tues - Fri.
Anyone else want to take a challenge with me? Just four days. Anyone out there want to see if dressing for success really works? Or does someone out there already do it?

I was always like you and never could get that part of Flylady down either until my son started to school. He’s in PreK I have to take him every morning at 7:45 am and I have to walk him in, so I try to look presentable. It has helped me, honestly.

We home school, so maybe that is part of my problem. Glad to hear though, I have high hopes for next week!

For me, I can’t stand to stay in jammies all day so I like to be dressed in the morning. I just don’t dress business like..whatever is comfortable. I’m all for comfort. I don’t wear outdoor shoes in the house. Why would I? I live in it…I don’t want the dirties from outside of the house indoors.
I think it’s the frame of mind. Say for instance, if you wear baggy clothes, you may not feel as attractive if you wore clothes that fit well. I’d say if you’re just as productive wearing jammies all day, by all means…whatever works for you.

Hey Judi,
I’ll join you on that! I don’t get dressed unless I have to. LOL! I usually wear my night shirt and cover up my legs with that throw that you saw on my chair…but it’s getting cold now!
But to experiment…next week, I’ll dress for success! Even on Monday.
We’ll see what happens.

I don’t like shoes either. In the summer, I’m barefoot all of the time. In the winter, I usually have socks on, but no shoes. What a great challenge.
